Braces for adults, what can I eat?
Adults with braces, what can they eat?
As I searched “what can I eat with braces?“ I stumbled upon an article about adults with braces. According to a 2014 survey done by the American Association of Orthodontist adults make up a record high of nearly 1.5 million orthodontics patients in the U.S. and Canada. A few weeks ago my husband became one of them.
What do I feed you???
Not only did my husband get braces, he also got spacers. Consequently he can not bite down at all! As we all know eating is a necessity therefore I decided to go on a quest to find some healthy and nourishing soft foods. I will be posting the recipes that my husband has enjoyed most.(Before I share my first recipe I should clarify that my husband and I are not vegan but since cutting out gluten, dairy and eggs I have found a deep appreciation for vegan and raw cuisine.)
Let’s get started on our gluten free, dairy free, egg free and braces friendly recipe.

Black bean and chicken soup
- To begin I cooked a few chicken thighs in salted water. I then shredded the chicken and added it to the soup.
- Pour black beans and diced tomatoes into a pot.
- Add 8 cups of chicken broth.
- You can add the seasonings of your choice. I used a few teaspoons of salt, pepper, Chipotle chile, and cayenne pepper and granulated garlic.
- For extra protein I added a chopped avocado. This also added creaminess to the soup. In the future I will probably add 2 avocados.
- Let soup simmer until beans are soft.
- Add shredded chicken and blend. I use a Ninja Blender. Make sure you blend soup in batches and be careful not to overfill the blender.
- Add more seasoning as needed.
- Top with your favorite hot sauce. Are you an adult with braces or do you know an adult with braces who could use some new food options? Stay tuned for more delicious “braces friendly” recipes.
